Sacraments
There are two rites that are considered sacraments in the Prebyterian Church; Holy Communion and Baptism. Other special services, such as funerals and weddings, can be performed at the church by one of the pastors. Please see the categories on the left for details.
Holy Communion
While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body." Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins." Matthew 26: 26-28
For Presbyterians, Holy Communion or the Lord's Supper is one of two sacraments of the church (the other is baptism), instituted by God and commended by Christ. We are following in the tradition of the early church when sharing this meal. Being washed with the water of baptism, we receive new life in Christ. In eating the bread and drinking the cup offered by God, our memory of the promises are made present by the Holy Spirit.

Baptisms
In the Presbyterian Church, baptisms may be performed on infants, or adults, usually by sprinkling of water. In the situation of an infant baptism, at least one parent must be a church member. We schedule baptisms for the second Sunday of the month, but with pastoral permission, an alternate Sunday can be scheduled. Parents wishing to have their children baptized at Worthington Presbyterian Church must attend a baptism class before their child's scheduled baptism. This class will explain more fully the Reformed view of the sacrament and go over the service of baptism in more detail. The Reverend Amy Avery leads these classes. To schedule a baptism and find out when the corresponding class will be held, contact Jan Elliott in the church office at 614-885-5355.
